1930
The varsity lightweight crew traveled to the Henley
Royal Regatta, the first Princeton crew to do so. The
crew traveled (with their shell) on the R.M.S. Aquitania,
where they "travelled second cabin, but were given the
ship from the swimming pool, reserved for us before
breakfast, to the long first class promenade deck for exer-
cise," according to one member of the crew. Contrary to
popular belief and all appearances, the blazers the crew
wore around the Stewards Enclosure are not still in use
today.
1934
Despite losing all but two letter winners, the varsity heavyweights
beat Navy and win both the Childs and Compton Cup, which had
been inaugurated the previous year and is awarded annually to the
winner of the Harvard-Princeton-MIT race. This earned them a
trip to Henley, making them the first Princeton heavyweight crew
to compete on the Thames Reach. Princeton beat Pembroke to
advance to the final but lost to Leander by three quarters of a
length in the regatta's final race.
1937
Dutch Schoch arrives at the boathouse to coach the freshman heavies, having
graduated from the University of Washington the previous spring. Schoch would
coach the the frosh heavies from 1937-1942. In 1939 and 1940, Schoch also took
on varsity lightweight coaching duties before moving on to coach the varsity
heavyweights for nearly two decades, from 1946-1965.
